Much to my own surprise, “file management” has to be one of the most requested things readers ask for when it comes to Logic.
Isn’t that something? I would’ve thought managing files would be a snooze fest. But apparently this is a topic in high demand! That just warms my geeky heart 🙂
First – I’ve actually posted several videos related to this very topic on WLPR. But obviously I haven’t done a good enough job organizing the website and channel so you can find them!
As a result, I’ve created a new YouTube playlist and Category on the website called “File Management.” That way it’s way easier to find these important videos:

Second – in today’s video let’s discuss one really important aspect of file management:
Backing up and archiving your Logic Projects.
Backing up is soooo important. Because as they say – stuff happens. Files get deleted. Hard drives stop working. Or worse…
It’s often recommended to back up your Projects in 3 locations. Typically 2 external hard drives, and one cloud solution.
But what do you do when you’re sitting on a lot of Projects and content? Juggling 3 separate backups can turn into a real pain in a hurry.
In fact, I’ve found myself in this very boat. After years of juggling hard drive after hard drive, I’m just sick of the struggle. So I decided to change my approach.
While I can’t claim to have the “perfect” backup solution in place, I think it’s the easiest way to manage Projects. But it does require a 3rd party service. And that’s Dropbox.
Check out today’s video. Maybe this archiving strategy might just make your life a lot easier. Have a better solution in place for backing up and archiving? Please, let us know in the comments below!
Yay! Thanks
When I try to upload Logic Pro X Projects Packs to Dropbox it immediately splits them into a pile of unusable files that can never be used again. I see you have Logic Projects saved to Dropbox , how were you able to do that? Do you have a video showing the correct way to upload Logic Project files so they are not corrupted (or need to be zipped). I really appreciate your work on these tutorials but this is something i have never been able to figure out! And it seems you do it easily.
Thanks
Hi Ansley, thanks for your comment! I always have found Logic Projects that are saved as Packages to be a bit more finicky. So I always save my Projects as Folders, and have never had problems as a result.
However, it is worth noting that recent MacOS updates now prevent Final Cut Projects from being synced over cloud-storage services. I only point this out because, who knows, perhaps Logic Projects could be next? Here’s a link to a Dropbox support page:

Another thought is that iCloud may be worth looking into as a storage solution. With the announcement of 6 TB and 12 TB storage options, iCloud may finally be a usable option for large Projects.
There’s also the fact that Logic Pro for iPad more deeply integrates with iCloud for saving and sharing Projects with Logic Pro for Mac.
I can only speculate, but perhaps deeper integration is to come for Logic Pro for Mac?
Anyways, back to your question. I’ve found saving Logic Pro Projects as Folders as opposed to Packages has proven to be more adaptable to Dropbox syncing.
