Why Logic Pro’s Compressor Is The Only Compressor You’ll Ever Need – 30 Days of Why Logic Pro Rules

Aside from Logic’s Channel EQ, I can’t think of any other LPX plugin I use more than the Compressor. Its versatility is hard to match. Which is why I just about never reach for a 3rd party compressor.

Compressor delivers 7 different models of awesome compression:

  • Digital Platinum provides clean, ultra-transparent digital compression
  • Studio VCA offers compression inspired by the Focusrite Red 3
  • Studio FET and Vintage FET deliver the beloved UREI 1176  compression style
  • Classic VCA is an approachable take to a dbx 165a style compression
  • Vintage VCA brings the much-heralded SSL G-bus inspired compression
  • Vintage Opto is a more versatile idea of the famed LA-2A style of compression

The Logic Effects manual states:

“Compressor emulates the sound and response of several professional-level compressors.”

(Excerpt From: Apple Inc. “Logic Pro X Effects.” Apple Books. https://books.apple.com/us/book/logic-pro-x-effects/id960808317 )

They’re not quite 1:1 direct emulations of the hardware units. But they are fantastic 🙂

Aside from the wonderful selection of compression styles, Compressor also offers:

  • A slew of metering options (VU-style Gain Reduction, Fabfilter-style waveform view, Input and Output peak meters)
  • 3 different styles of Distortion (Soft, Hard, Clip) to add grit and vibe to your tracks
  • Both Internal and External Sidechaining for pinpointed compression

What’s not to love? Today let’s take a look at how awesome Compressor is.
