How to Save Your Most Brilliant Projects as Templates (Without All the Extra Files and Regions)

How often does anyone talk about when a song or mix goes right? Like, so right that you couldn’t be more proud of the results 🙂

It could be a song you produced, mixed, or scored. Whatever you did in that Project, you nailed the delivery. And maybe you thought, “I should DEFINITELY save this Project as a Template!”

This happened to me just recently in fact. I was so happy with the plugins I used for mastering a track I was like, “oooh, that was good! I gotta save that.”

Saving Templates in Logic is no biggie. Load up a Project, head to File > Save As Template…, and Logic will save a new Template for you to load.

But, for some reason, Logic seems to like to copy all the Audio Regions and Files along with the Template?

That’s far from ideal. Because every time you open your new songwriting template, you’ll have to spend time cleaning house! Your Template is full of regions, and your Project Browser is hanging on to irrelevant audio files.

So while it takes a bit of work up-front, today I’d like to show you how to save your most brilliant Projects as Logic Templates. Without the unnecessary files and regions.

Automation can be cleared on all tracks with one command. Mix Menu/ Delete Automation/Delete All Track Automation.

Clearing our Project Alternatives, Markers, Arrangements and Tempo maps is also recomended when creating templates from projects.

Hey Tony, thanks for pointing all that out! Great information. I personally like to leave Markers so I can repurpose them for other Projects. Again, all great points.
